The MKUBA scheme in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania is an example of eco-credits in action. Developed and implemented by the Mwambao Coastal Community Network, MKUBA was launched in 2018. Through the scheme, individuals can join community savings groups from which they can access interest-free loans if they commit to environmental actions such as mangrove planting, beach cleanups, and using sustainable fishing gear.
