Solar cabinet dryers are designed to replace traditional open-air fish drying methods, commonly used in small-scale fisheries, with a clean energy solution. In coastal Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, women processors— who represent most postharvest actors—dry small pelagic fish such as dagaa on sand, tarpaulins or raised racks. This exposes the product to contamination by dust, sand, insects, animals and sudden rainfall. The result is a product of inconsistent quality, unsafe food, significant postharvest losses and reduced income for processors.
